Manila, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine National Meteorological Administration reported on the 26th that many parts of the country were hit by a heatwave that day, with the heat index reaching a "dangerous" level.
The report stated that on that day, the heat index in 18 areas including Dagupan City in the northern province of Bansheen, Kataman City in the central northern province of Samar, and Puerto Princesa in the southern province of Palawan reached or exceeded 42 degrees Celsius; It is expected that on the 27th, 14 regions in the Philippines will still have a "dangerous" heat index.
The heat index refers to the temperature perceived by the human body when relative humidity is combined with air temperature. The Philippine National Weather Service classifies the heat index into four levels based on the degree of danger: "cautious" (27 ℃ -32 ℃), "extremely cautious" (33 ℃ -41 ℃), "dangerous" (42 ℃ -51 ℃), and "extremely dangerous" (52 ℃ and above).
March to May is usually the hottest and driest season in the Philippines every year. The Philippine National Weather Service warns that when the heat index reaches "dangerous" or above, the risk of heat related illnesses such as heat cramps and heat exhaustion will significantly increase.
The Philippine Civil Defense Office reminds the public to pay attention to hydration and avoid outdoor activities during high temperature periods. (End)
