China calls for strengthening the core role of the United Na

On April 24th, Sun Lei, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, spoke at the UN General Assembly's interactive dialogue on the "Future Compact" and the "UN 80th Anniversary Reform Initiative" (UN80), calling for strengthening the core role of the United Nations.

 

Sun Lei said that the current international situation is becoming increasingly turbulent. With the increasingly prominent issues of security disorder, imbalanced development, and ineffective governance, the United Nations is also facing severe political challenges and financial difficulties. The Future Compact and UN80 have emerged, carrying the firm commitment and good vision of the international community to promote multilateralism and improve global governance, and reflecting the determination of member states to promote the quality and efficiency of the United Nations and keep pace with the times.

 

Sun Lei emphasized that in difficult times, it is necessary to strengthen the core role of the United Nations as the most universal, representative, and authoritative intergovernmental international organization, enhance the effectiveness of the UN's work in the three pillars of peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights, and support the work of the Secretary General. The starting point and foothold of both the Future Compact and UN80 are to uphold the authority of the United Nations and strengthen its role.

 

Sun Lei stated that UN80 has made phased progress, and at the same time, reforms are increasingly entering deep waters, making the next stage of tasks more complex and arduous. China expects all member states and the Secretariat to uphold the original intention of reform, focus on action orientation, and promote the review of authorization implementation and structural reform in an inclusive and transparent manner. In this process, we must effectively follow the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, safeguard the leading and decision-making power of member states in the reform process, and balance the promotion of the three pillars of development. At the same time, we must resolutely abandon political manipulation and ensure that the development pillar is not weakened, and the representation and voice of developing countries are not affected.
